G2G Nomads Play Like a Girl Rugby Clinic

The Grassroots to Global campaign culminated with an exciting touch rugby festival on September 17, 2022, at Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite. The campaign aims to develop and sustain an enabling environment for girls and women to pursue their interest in Rugby Football by cultivating support from the community.

The initiative began with a two-day leadership workshop attended by nominated female club leaders from La Liga, Manila Nomads, Alabang Eagles, Makati Mavericks, Albay Bulkans, and Clark Jets. Following the workshop, the club leaders organized two half-day touch rugby clinics, aiming to teach young women the fundamentals and beauty of the sport. The participants of these clinics participated in the touch rugby festival.

To support Grassroots to Global, the Manila Nomads Rugby Club organized Grassroots to Global through the Play Like A Girl campaign. The first touch rugby clinic was held on August 27, 2022, and was participated by 10 women and girls and eight participated despite the rain in the second round on September 10, 2022. The clinics were led by coaches Bianca Arco, Lin Tan, Mandy Nurrenbern, Wyxie Carolina, Sha Enales, Ronalyn Molines, and Johanna Erroba alongside volunteers from Manila Rogues. Nord Anglia International School Manila was the venue partner for the clinics.

In reflection, one of the trained Nomads Rogues club leaders Janelle, who is also one of the youngest in the club, wrote, “I was given the honor to be nominated as one of the club leaders to represent [Manila Nomads] Rogues and this is undoubtedly an empowering experience. It is inspiring to hear the stories of my fellow club leaders. They have struggled and overcome obstacles as women in a sport that is not only male-dominated but is also privy to misconceptions. It is also encouraging to witness the enthusiasm of the participants as well as the support from the club management. This campaign is truly a personification of young women empowering young women. The future of women’s rugby in the Philippines is bright and I cannot wait to see it grow further.”

Play Like A Girl is Manila Nomads Rugby Club’s campaign to support Grassroots to Global, in collaboration with the Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU), and in partnership with Nord Anglia International School Manila.
