New Youth Coaches ready to impart rugby and life skills to kids

The Manila Nomads Rugby Club welcomed to its Youth Rugby Program nine new Youth Development Coaches who completed the Nomads Youth “Learn To Play” Rugby Program Coach Training Workshop last February 3-5 & 10-12, 2023, in Cainta, Rizal.

The workshop was a four-day training program under ChildFund’s Rugby Reconnect curriculum, which covers various rugby and life skills that the Youth Coaches will impart to children and young people through the youth program.

The Youth Coaches who participated had been shortlisted from an open recruitment day hosted by the club’s Local Government Unit Partner, Barangay Carmona in Makati City, where candidates were invited to participate in group screening activities facilitated by Nomads and ChildFund volunteers.

The Youth Coaches were joined by PRFU Development Officer Nev Consemino and Nomads Development Officer Paolo Sumudlayon, who provided support and guidance to help the Youth Coaches pass their training and assessments.

The Rugby Reconnect curriculum was delivered by ChildFund lead educator John Harris. Other educators present to deliver the curriculum are members from different clubs from the Philippine rugby community, such as Marion Mongcal, Jenjen Malayo, Jhon Paul Abong from the Negros Island Rugby Club, Roscoe Rivero from the Davao Durians Rugby Club, Jane Francisco from the Davao Durians Rugby Club and Makati Mavericks, and Ish Lanzar from the Makati Mavericks.

The two-weekend event was organized and supervised by Nomads volunteers Lin Tan, Carl Magtanong, and Sha Enales, who played vital roles in ensuring the workshop was a success.

The workshop concluded with a certification ceremony on February 12, 2023, where the Nomads Rugby Club and its partners, the Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU) and ChildFund Rugby welcomed the new Youth Development Coaches: Amanda Sopenasky, Gab Valbuena, Mark Belbes, Ren-Marc Torrero, Nicx Nicholas, Janin Puig, Dianne Gregorio, Ezra Gatus, and Juaren Castro. Representatives from Barangay Carmona Makati also attended the ceremony.

The Nomads Youth “Learn To Play” Rugby Program Coach Training Workshop was a success, and the club is excited to see the new coaches in action as they begin working with children and young people through the youth program.

“Learn To Play” is a Nomads Youth Rugby Program campaign in partnership with the Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU) and ChildFund Rugby.
